HI Kahakuloa Head

Getting there

It is very difficult and in many cases downright impossible to find international direct flights to Hawaii. As a connection point, you may want to choose either Los Angeles or San Francisco, as there are the most flights available from these airports. There are a number of connections from the US West Coast to Maui, Kauai and Big Island, but most by far go to Honolulu on Oahu island. For transportation between the islands, there are several airlines with affordable rates. The alternative to air transport is travelling by ship, either on board of a cruise or with a regular connection from the West Coast.

Hawaii enjoys a humid-warm climate all year long, however the weather can differe greatly from one island to the other. Hurricane season is between June and November, but Hawaii is only rarely hit by really severe storms. From October to March, there is considerably more rainfall than the rest of the year.

By far the most Hawaiian hotels can be found in the Waikiki area of Honolulu. There are also a number of accommodation options outside of this area and of course also on the other islands, for these it is generally recommendable to make advance reservations. If you are staying in Honolulu, the rate for shuttle service is about $ 12-15, a taxi will set you back $ 30-40.

Finding your way

Contrary to most large cities on the US mainland, Honolulu’s streets are not in a checkerboard grid. For orientation purposes, Hawaiians usually do not use cardinal points, but when giving directions refer to mauka  - direction towards the mountains - and makai - direction towards the ocean.

Violent crime numbers on Hawaii are generally lower than on the US mainland. However, tourists sometimes fall victim of property crimes. Particularly in tourist areas like Waikiki, all valuables should be removed from parked cars and paid close attention to in order to prevent pickpocketing.
